CHAPTER 7

A Balthazarian Banquet

James was concentrating so hard that he was startled when there was a gentle knock on his door. “Jim? May I come in?” asked Charlotte. Her gentle voice soothed James. He was also comforted to hear Thistle Whit cooing. Once he invited Charlotte in, she opened the door and carried the baby into the room. Blanche was right behind her.

Charlotte laid Thistle Whit on the bed next to her papa. Thistles started trying to crawl around to explore this exciting new world. James got concerned that Thistle Whit might fall off the bed and immediately got some big heavy pillows to keep her safe. He placed the pillows in a box-like shape around Thistles so that his daughter wouldn’t fall off the bed. “I can’t do this again, Charlotte. I mean,” James took a deep breath then sighed, “the banquet where we met was alright, but my first banquet was terrible. I can still remember how cruel the nobles were when they found out that my folks were dead.”

“I just hope that Thistles doesn’t get kidnapped or anything else awful. Maybe we could bring her to the banquet this time,” Charlotte joked.

James looked at her and then asked, “Have you ever seen any babies, or children, at any banquet? Because I sure haven’t.”

Charlotte slyly looked up at James and smiled. “Well, then we could be the first set of parents to bring our little one to a banquet.”

James didn’t want to upset the sultan; on the other hand, he had been scared, not just about the banquet, but also about Thistle Whit’s safety.

“I don’t trust Mirza. He’s going to try to hurt Alcatraz. We have to warn Aguamenta,” James told Charlotte. He had had his suspicions before, but after getting to his room James had heard Mirza talking to another advisor to the sultan and had been horrified at the threats that Mirza had made in regards to the Alliance. He had immediately started trying to find a radio, but although he had found one in his room, it wasn’t the type he had been looking for.

Charlotte agreed. “He spooked me too. The anger in his eyes when he saw us for the first time was unnerving. I’m guessing that this was what your premonition was about. We have to get Artemis back to Aguamenta as quickly as possible.”

“You’re right,” James said. Aguamenta was in trouble. And if Mirza had been in cahoots with Skinner as James suspected, then it was worse than he had feared.

Just as he was about to talk to Charlotte about both contacting Alcatraz and warning him, and also leaving Balthazar in the morning, the door opened and the vizier entered. He brought a creepy looking dark-haired olive-skinned woman with him. James and Charlotte gasped in fear as they stood up.

“Time to get ready for the banquet,” Mirza said, his eyes narrowed and furious. At the gesture of the vizier, the creepy woman came over and roughly grabbed Charlotte.

“Charlotte! No! Leave her alone!” shouted James, angrily.
